Scope
Israel and the Greater Middle East

In this report we analyze the video “IRASTORZA: ‘Irán es una cuestión de vida o muerte para Israel. Netanyahu se lo está jugando todo’” (“IRASTORZA: ‘Iran is a matter of life and death for Israel. Netanyahu is betting everything on it’”), published on October 20, 2026 on the YouTube channel Negocios TV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJM9er3MrYg). In this interview, a presenter of the channel, identified in the video as Sergio, talks with Eduardo Irastorza, professor at OBS Business School, about the situation in the Middle East, social unrest in Europe and a possible summit between Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping. Irastorza argues that the United States is seeking to exit, perhaps with one last large-scale attack on Iran, a conflict that in his view was generated and is largely sustained by Israel, for which Iran is “a matter of life and death”, while Netanyahu, who according to the interview cannot lose the elections without ending up in prison, lets Washington bear the weight of the war.

Summary of the analysis

In the sections devoted to Israel and the Greater Middle East, the video contains 21 verifiable factual claims: 10 true, 7 misleading, 1 false, 1 with insufficient evidence and 2 interpretive disputes. Its OMD Veracity Index is 70 out of 100 (weighted base: 69.7), and no penalty had to be applied, since no serious misleading or false claims were found during the analysis.

The interview does not cite sources, and the presenter does not contrast the interviewee’s claims; a large part of the current-affairs data, most of it correct, is contributed by the presenter himself. The claims of the interviewee are, above all, causal explanations and assessments of the situation, so that a significant proportion of them is not scored: they are opinions, forecasts or matters of interpretation.

The main veracity problems are concentrated in the central thesis about the war with Iran, where Iran is described as a rising power (I.8) and the United States as an actor that never wanted to become involved and that bears the weight of the war (I.3 and I.6), and in the judicial situation of Netanyahu (III.7 and III.8). The only false claim (III.2) is an error about the date of the Israeli elections.

    Misleading

The United States is seeking “an orderly exit” from a conflict “in which it never really wanted to be involved”
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

The available data do not indicate that the United States was dragged in against its will: it began the 2026 war together with Israel on February 28 (Operation Epic Fury, in parallel with the Israeli Roaring Lion), after assembling its largest deployment in the region since 2003, setting a ten-day ultimatum on February 20 and approving, on February 26, a plan against the Iranian leadership. It is true that Netanyahu had spent months urging Trump to attack and that on February 11 he presented him with a plan in the Situation Room, according to The New York Times; the decision, however, was American. Back in June 2025 it had already bombed the Iranian nuclear facilities on its own. It is true, on the other hand, that in October 2026 the Administration is reluctant to resume the strikes before the midterm elections and that, according to Axios, most of Trump’s advisers prefer to maintain economic pressure.

    Misleading

“The United States is bearing the weight of the war”
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

In economic and operational terms, the American contribution is greater: the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated in September 2026 a cost of USD 38 billion for the Pentagon, and a later Department of Defense estimate put it at USD 43.6 billion, as against the NIS 35 billion (about USD 11.5 billion) that the Israeli Ministry of Finance attributed to the war in a preliminary April estimate, so that the periods are not fully comparable; in addition, United States Central Command struck more than 11,000 targets up to March 28 and, according to a spokesman for Netanyahu, the United States maintains thousands of troops in Israel. The human cost, however, fell to a greater extent on Israel, with 40 soldiers, one contractor and 31 civilians killed and 7,841 wounded, as against the 19 American service members killed that the Pentagon recorded on September 23 (21 after its update of October 9 and 10), one worker for an American contractor and one American citizen who died on October 10 in the Houthi (Ansar Allah) attack on King Khalid airport in Riyadh, confirmed by the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Moreover, in October 2026 there is no large-scale fighting: operations are paused and negotiations are stalled.

    Misleading

Iran is a power “of the dimensions it is reaching”, that is, a growing one
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

Iranian capabilities have suffered a sharp setback: Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei died in the initial attacks of February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel struck thousands of targets and bombed, among others, the Natanz, Arak and Ardakan facilities, and in September 2026 the White House argued that Iran is “weaker than ever”. At the same time, there are signs of reconstruction: in September 2026, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, noted “movement” in the works at Pickaxe Mountain, and The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran is again producing ballistic missiles at underground facilities; moreover, since June 2025 the IAEA has been unable to verify the state of the Iranian stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. Presenting Iran as a rising power therefore omits the documented setback: what is on record is an attempt at reconstitution whose scale has not been verified. The setback is particularly visible in the economy: in April 2026 the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast a 6.1% contraction of Iranian gross domestic product in 2026, revised down to 7.6% in October according to Iran International, a London-based opposition outlet; the Statistical Center of Iran put year-on-year inflation at 88.6% in June, and crude oil exports fell from some 2 million barrels per day in March to between 220,000 and 255,000 in August, according to Reuters, as a result of the American naval blockade. Iran has also lost part of its effective control of the Strait of Hormuz, whose waters it considers its own: according to the maritime tracking firm Kpler, more than 80% of the transits in the first half of August used the Omani corridor, protected by the United States Navy, and the tolls that Tehran had imposed in the spring failed to be collected.

    Misleading

The Houthis “are controlling the passage of ships” through Bab el-Mandeb and Westerners “are having a hard time of it as things stand today”
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

Traffic remains well below pre-crisis levels, but it is recovering: according to Lloyd's List Intelligence, in September 2026 there were 1,215 transits through Bab el-Mandeb, 16% more than a year earlier and 47% fewer than before the Houthi campaign, and container ship traffic reached its highest level since the start of the crisis as shipping lines returned to the route. The blockade declared by the Houthis is directed against Saudi ports and vessels linked to Saudi Arabia: of the ten ships attacked since July, seven were Saudi, and no new attacks had been corroborated from August 24 until October 1, although on October 7 a Chinese container ship was fired on without anyone claiming responsibility. The Houthis therefore have the capacity to threaten the passage, but they do not control it.

    Misleading

For Netanyahu, losing the elections “practically means going to prison” (presenter; the interviewee endorses this: “That is so”), because he “has countless pending proceedings”
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

Netanyahu has been on trial since 2020 in a single proceeding that brings together three cases (known as 1000, 2000 and 4000) for fraud, breach of trust and bribery, offenses punishable by up to 3 and 10 years in prison, respectively. There is no judgment, the presumption of innocence applies and the trial is taking its course independently of the electoral result: Netanyahu concluded his testimony on June 24, 2026, after 98 sessions, and the proceeding continues with the defense witnesses. In addition, he has been summoned to testify before a state commission of inquiry into the purchase of submarines, which is not a criminal proceeding. Losing office therefore does not entail going to prison, and three cases in a single proceeding do not amount to “countless proceedings”.
