Israel and the Greater Middle East

In this report we analyze the video “Trump vuelve a apostar por Netanyahu: ¿qué busca?” (“Trump bets on Netanyahu again: what is he after?”), published on October 21, 2026 on the YouTube channel FRANCE 24 Español (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG-VTtF0VxU). It is an edition of the news program “Expreso de Oriente”, 11 minutes and 44 seconds long, which combines the headlines, an interview with the analyst Agustín Berea, a report on Israeli demographics ahead of the legislative elections of October 27 and a segment on settler attacks in the West Bank. Its main thesis holds that Donald Trump’s electoral endorsement of Benjamin Netanyahu, which came after months of tension, responds more to personal and economic interests than to public policy, and that it may have a limited effect on the Israeli electorate.

Summary of the analysis

The video contains 51 verifiable factual claims: 32 true, 13 misleading, 0 false, 2 with insufficient evidence and 4 interpretive disputes. Its OMD Veracity Index is 85 out of 100 (weighted base: 84.8), and no penalty had to be applied, since no serious misleading or false claims were found during the analysis.

The demographic and electoral figures come for the most part from the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), and those relating to Trump’s endorsement, to the polls and to the situation in the West Bank coincide, in essence, with the primary and news agency sources consulted. Several of those figures, however, are presented without the qualifications that the sources themselves include, and the video does not identify where any of them come from, apart from the demographic projection attributed to the IDI and the data attributed to the UN and to Reporters Without Borders.

The main veracity problems are concentrated in the interview with the guest analyst (Block II), where several claims combine true facts in causal relationships that the sources do not document, in particular the claim that Gulf money would reach the Trump family “through Israel” (II.6). Secondly, the demographic report (Block III) contains seven claims that are misleading for lack of precision, while the report on settler attacks in the West Bank (Block IV) is confirmed in full.

    Misleading

Trump had accused Netanyahu of seeking to sabotage the talks with Tehran
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

Trump publicly complained that Israeli actions in Lebanon were hampering the negotiations with Iran (“a little bit perturbed”, “I don’t want [the deal] to blow up”) and asked Netanyahu not to respond to an Iranian attack. However, no statement has been located in which he attributes to him the intention of sabotaging them. That formulation comes from a U.S. intelligence report published by The Wall Street Journal on June 19, 2026, according to which Netanyahu might undermine the agreement, and from Iranian leaders.

    Misleading

There are “verifiable links” of money from the Arab Gulf states being channeled through Kushner and his partners, “through Israel”, and from which the Trump family benefits
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

The claim brings together three documented but distinct facts. First, Affinity Partners, Kushner’s fund, has received USD 2 billion from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and USD 1.5 billion from Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which Congress is investigating. Second, that fund has invested in Israeli companies, such as Shlomo Group, Phoenix Financial and defense-linked firms. Third, the Trump family maintains businesses of its own in the Gulf, such as World Liberty Financial or towers bearing its brand. No source documents, however, a circuit of Gulf money that passes through Israel and benefits the Trump family: the family’s profits come from direct deals in the Gulf, and the letters from Congress raise hypotheses, not findings.

    Interpretive dispute

The war with Iran is a war “that Netanyahu insisted on starting”
Why it is “Interpretive dispute”: context and sources

In favor: according to The New York Times, Netanyahu presented Trump with a plan against Iran on February 11, 2026, and according to Reuters he pressed the case in a final call before the attack. Against: the war was launched jointly by the United States and Israel, Trump made the final decision and maintains that Israel did not persuade him, and Reuters specifies that its reporting does not demonstrate that Netanyahu forced the decision. The discrepancy lies in how responsibility for a shared decision is attributed.

    Misleading

“Every time” there appears to be progress, Israel does something and “throws it all overboard”
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

There are several documented episodes in which Israeli actions disrupted U.S. diplomacy: the attack on South Pars in March, the bombings in Lebanon on the day of the April ceasefire, and the threat and the attack on Beirut in June, which led Iran to suspend the talks. However, not all the setbacks are attributable to Israel: the collapse of the truce in July was attributed to attacks by both sides, it was Trump who rejected the Iranian proposal of September, and Iranian attacks on ships continue. The generalization “every time” does not hold.

    Misleading

20% of the population, “that is, 2.2 million citizens”, are Arabs
Why it is “Misleading”: context and sources

The CBS puts the Arab population at 2,173,000 people, 21.1% of the total, but not all of them are citizens. The figure includes the Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, around 90% of whom are permanent residents without citizenship, and the Golan Druze, only one in five of whom is a citizen. For that reason Arabs make up 18% of the resident electorate, and not 21%.
